Traumatised clients. Workshop on 13 Nov 2010
The workshop is designed for counsellors who are working with clients who have witnessed, or been exposed to, life threatening situations. This may relate to natural, or human-made disasters, road traffic accidents and transport accidents and the discovery of suicide victims. Counsellors working with clients involved in, or witnessing, serious physical or sexual assaults, or the threat of such assaults will also find it valuable. This would also include bank and store robberies.
The workshop is not specifically aimed at the survivors of long term sexual abuse, although counsellors working with such clients are likely to find the day useful.
This workshop is for counsellors receiving referrals after the events described above, it is not for those doing field or site work during or immediately after a critical incident.
The topics covered are:
Underlying theory of symbolisation.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and DSM IV definitions
Normal human reactions to life threatening events
Small group exercise to underpin understanding of life threatening events
Understanding, using and scoring the “impact of events” scale
Consideration of case notes and any subsequent legal process.
The workshop is facilitated by Allan Turner who has attended hundreds of critical incidents all over the UK and Irish Republic, and also has wide experience with traumatised clients. He has run training for Critical Incident Site Work in places as far apart as Tenterden in Kent and Oban in Argyll and Bute. Allan is expecting his chapter on trauma to be published in a new book “Clients Issues in Person-Centred Practice” (Sage) early 2010.
