Dr. Terry Lynch is a GP and psychotherapist living and working in Limerick, Ireland. He qualified as a medical doctor at University College Cork in 1982. He then trained to become a GP, a role in which he worked in Limerick, Ireland until 1997. By this time, Terry Lynch had become concerned about certain aspects of health and health care. In particular, he became very concerned about how people experiencing mental health problems were dealt with. Years of questioning and searching for understanding of mental health and mental health problems, and for better ways to work with people experiencing mental health problems, culminated in the publication of his book Beyond Prozac Ireland in 2001, and in Britain in 2004. This book was short-listed for the UK Mind Book of the Year award in 2002, and reached number 3 in the Irish non-fiction best-selling charts in 2001.
Terry Lynch now works exclusively in the field of mental health. He was a member of the Irish Department of Health-appointed Expert Group on Mental Health Policy (2003-6). This Expert Group's Report, A Vision for Change (2006), forms the basis of mental health policy for the next 7-10 years in Ireland. He is also a member of the Independent Monitoring Group for A Vision for Change (2006-8) and the Irish Health Service Executive's Expert Advisory Group on Mental Health (2006-8).
The day will consist of an exploration of important mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, bereavement, trauma and suicide. Other mental health problems, such as schizophrenia and manic depression/bipolar disorder will be discussed. The medical approach to mental health issues will be explored. The importance of increasing our understanding of mental health, and mental health problems will be discussed. Recovery and the recovery process will be explored. The role of medication will be discussed, including antidepressants.
Interaction and participation will be welcomed and encouraged. Dr. Terry Lynch's talks tend to be informal, lively, with plenty of interaction |
